CHAPTER 8

Alex wanted to run. Default to his standard response to anything that caused a moment of unpleasant thought. Avoidance was the best coping mechanism, after all. Yet he couldn’t run, as that would prove his mother’s point. His mother’s inaccurate point. Alex was ready to get back to his life, whatever that looked like. All he knew is that it hinged on taking his rightful place at the helm of the bar named after him.

And now he was being shut out of an event he’d never heard of? Fuck that. He stomped around behind the bar, making more noise than strictly necessary to set up for the day. The door swung open and sunlight streamed onto the worn oak flooring. A group of men filed in and Sam wasted no time greeting them. She was probably relieved as hell to have an excuse to get away from this train wreck of a conversation.

He watched her smile at the men as she took their drink orders and his gut twisted. Her expression was a particular smile he’d never seen. One of the men said something that made her laugh, and the sound carried across the bar to land somewhere near his heart.

Ugh. His careful plan to avoid feelings was crumbling. Between his mother’s well-meaning overprotection and Sam’s brightness beaming across the room at him, Alex wanted to bolt. He measured the distance between him and the front door, then glanced over at his mom, who was tapping on her phone. Probably texting his sister the update on Operation Get Alex to Talk About Feelings.

A floral scent announced Sam’s return to the bar before Alex was conscious of her presence. He was immediately brought back to earlier, when he had his nose in her neck and his cock inside her. His dick perked up at the memory and he squashed the thought by counting backwards from one hundred. It was a trick taught by the military Psychologist for when he started to feel panicky. It didn’t seem to work for him those times, but it was pretty effective at dampening his libido.

“I need four of the house lager, please,” she said in a low voice.

Out of habit, Alex pulled a pint glass and moved to the taps.

Before realizing he didn’t know what the house lager was. The taps lined up in front of him were mostly unfamiliar, except for the few that were national brands. Before he could ask the question and give his mother further ammunition, Sam leaned close and whispered, “It’s the third from the left.”

Alex reached for the handle and expertly filled the pint glass. The brand of beer wasn’t one he recognized, but he knew the beer scene in Jackson had exploded recently and he assumed that this was a local brew. He filled the three remaining glasses in turn.

“Thanks,” Sam replied as she scooped up the glasses as one and made her way to the table. Impressive. She knew her way around a bar. It occurred to him that she probably was used to filling the drink orders as well as serving them.
